for anyone heading to
Nagasaki. But don’t
miss the hypocenter - a place for
contemplation and reflection, at the
bomb’s ground zero.

This ghost-town island
was once a major coal
mining community with
a peak population
density of over 84,000
people per square
kilometer (over 10 times that of Tokyo
today). It’s worth the short ferry ride -
when the weather’s good.
Actually, there are 208
of them, but they’re so
bothers to count! 25km
north of Sasebo Port,
this island group is the largest collection
of islands in Japan. There are boat tours
around the islands, but you can also just
enjoy them from a park on top of a hill
